5 Fall Lawn Care Tips
Just because it’s fall, doesn’t mean lawn care stops! It means the exact opposite. You must continue your lawn care throughout the colder months. Here are 5 Fall Lawn Care Tips that will prepare your lawn for the cold season.
5 Fall Lawn Care Tips for New Jersey
- Mowing
- Fall Yard Cleanup
- Aeration and Overseeding
- Remove Excess Thatch
- Drain Irrigation Lines
1. Mowing
Keep mowing your lawn even in the cold months. Grass doesn’t stop growing even during the colder months until that first frost over during the winter. Cutting your grass at its normal height until it stops growing is a good way to keep your lawn in tip top shape.
2. Fall Yard Cleanup
Getting rid of leaves and picking up twigs allows your lawn to breathe and keep it healthy during those colder fall/winter months. This will also limit rodents and insects from creating a habitat within your yard. An added bonus is that your yard will be the cleanest on the block! Our sister company- Custom Landscaping and Lawn Care is now taking sign up for fall yard cleanups.
3. Aeration and Overseeding
Aerating compacted soil will break things up to allow nutrients, water, and air to reach the grass roots. To pair with aeration, overseeding is also important during the fall months. This will allow the seed to properly germinate, especially if you have low patches. Aerating your lawn is one of the best things you can do for your lawn.
4. Remove Excess Thatch
Thatch is the layer of stems, leaves, and roots that sit between the grass and soil. Aeration is a good way to break up thatch as well as raking and vertical mowers. After you remove the thatch, you can compost it.
5. Drain Irrigation Lines
To keep your irrigation system in tip-top shape, winterizing is important. To winterize your system, drain it and shut it down. If you don’t drain your irrigation lines, you run the risk of water freezing in the valves, pipes, and sprinkler heads. If this happens, it will expand and could possibly destroy your system. We don’t want that!
Mowing, yard cleanups, aeration and overseeding, removing thatch, and closing your irrigation system are the best ways to keep your lawn in the shape you want it in throughout the fall and the winter months.
