5 Common Lawn Diseases in New Jersey

The Most Common Lawn Diseases

In New Jersey, a lot of people pride themselves in maintaining a healthy lawn. It is absolutely crucial to do so when there are lawn diseases throughout the state that could take over. With the expertise of lawn care professionals at Healthy Lawn, we can help with information and treatments to save your lawn from any of the following diseases. Here are the 5 common lawn diseases in New Jersey.

1.  Snow Mold

There are two different types of snow mold, pink snow mold and gray snow mold. Pink snow mold are patches that start out about 1 to 3 inches in diameter. They may enlarge to be as big as 1 to 2 feet across, but this is still smaller than those of gray snow mold. During and after snow melt is when gray snow mold will show.

They are around 1 to 3 feet in diameter, but can be bigger. The wet grass will look matted together covered in mold spores. When this disease develops, it could kill areas of turf, but with a fertilizer program to favor growth, that will be enough to correct the issue. You may however see old mold “scars” until warmer months.

2. Red Thread

Red Thread disease is a fungus that is caused by excessive moisture or under fertilized lawn. It is called red thread because wet grass blades take on the appearance of what looks like red thread. Usually, red thread doesn’t need fungicide. Adding fertilizer and managing cut height will manage the disease.

3. Dollar Spot

Dollar Spot disease is caused by excessive moisture and poor drainage. This disease favors high humidity and temperatures. Bluegrass is most susceptible to Dollar Spot. Like Red Thread, Dollar Spot can be treated with the right fertilizer. However, it can spread quickly, so it’s best to get the jump on it!

4. Brown Patch

Brown Patch can occur on all types of turf. It favors high temperatures and high humidity. This will show up as circular, rough patches of grass that will be surrounded by healthy grass. If conditions are right for brown patch, it can take over portions of your lawn within a couple hours’ time. If it gets out of control, you may even need to reseed. The best way to avoid Brown Patch is by not giving it the conditions to grow. Water your lawn in the early morning and allow the sun to evaporate the leftover moisture during the day.

5. Summer Patch

Summer Patch is a severe lawn disease most found on Kentucky Bluegrass. It is a difficult disease to manage, but not impossible! This disease shows up during times of high heat, especially in the later summer months as brownish or tan turf. This disease needs evaluation right away to setup a fungus control program. If your lawn has a history of Summer Patch, a seasonal fungus control would be recommended.
