1. Mosquitos are drawn in by dark clothing.
Colors like black, navy blue, or even a bold color like red are easier colors for mosquitos to spot as opposed to white or even something like yellow.
2. Mosquitos kill more people than any other creature in the world.
Spreading diseases like malaria, dengue, west nile virus, yellow fever, chikungunya, and lymphatic filariasis make this creature more than just a nuisance. Mosquitos kill around 725,000 people per year, but an animal like a snake only kills around 50,000 people a year.
3. It's believed that beer drinkers are more attractive to mosquitos, what a buzzkill!
By drinking just 12 ounces of beer, you’ll be more attractive to mosquitoes. Drinking beer increases the ethanol content in your sweat which is why they will flock your way.
4. Mosquitos can beat their wings up to 1,000 times per second.
They usually average around 600-700 beats per second though. So the reason we hear them buzzing in our ear, is from their wings. Also, they can change the frequency of the buzz especially if they are chasing a mate.
5. Only female mosquitos bite.
Female mosquitos need a blood meal to get protein to produce their eggs whereas male mosquitos feed off of plant nectar for their energy. This means that only female mosquitos transmit diseases since males do not bite you.
6. They only need an inch of water to lay eggs.
Any standing or still water can be a good place for a mosquito to hatch its eggs. Even something as little as a bottle cap of water is good enough for them. So avoid any still water in your yard to lessen mosquitos!
7. Full moon = more mosquitos.
Mosquito activity increases by up to 300% during a full moon. This is because mosquitos use visual cues for their next meal which is easier for them to do during a full moon.
8. Mosquitos have a life span of approximately one to two months.
They hatch, mature, feed, and then die. They have the shortest lifespans of any creatures on the planet. And, depending on the species, some only live for 2 to 3 weeks. Imagine having that short of a life span!
9. Mosquitos can lay more than 8,000 eggs in a single life span.
The lay approximately 100 eggs at a time, but depending on the species, it ranges anywhere from 50-500. These eggs can even survive for up to eight months without drying out, even through the winter.
10. Mosquitos are old, dating back to the Triassic period!
The oldest mosquito fossil dates back 79 million years ago, but scientists date them back 226 million years ago. I mean you have seen Jurassic Park right? Those mosquitos were feeding on dinosaurs back then.
